In 2009, almost one in two (45 per cent) Māori aged 15 to 64 years smoked cigarettes. This compares to just one in five (20 per cent) Europeans/Other ethnicity.
Traditionally Māori were an auahi kore / smokefree culture. Auahi Kore works to change attitudes towards smoking, encourage Māori to either stop smoking or not to start and to reclaim this smokefree status.
